About Martlet Kayak Club

Who we are.

Martlet Kayak Club is a friendly club based on Brighton Beach between the Marina and the Palace Pier.

We love all things Brighton, kayaking and watersports.  We have weekly club and social nights, as well as frequent local trips, and further afield. We have a great relaxed atmosphere for beginners to be able to learn and develop their skills with the help of our volunteer coaches and leaders. Our paddlers have gone on to do some amazing things, including competing in competitions around the country, but most importantly having an amazing time with this great sport.

Our location on the Sussex coast is perfect for this as we can paddle around the piers, marina and the cliffs, as well as surfing on wavier days. We run paddle trips to rivers within the local South Downs AONB and even river trips at night!

We are a community of welcoming and happy paddlers who love a social BBQ, a pub visits, or even going to see the Burning of the Clocks in Brighton. We love hearing what ideas people have for social events, trips and club nights. It’s so easy  to get involved, and throw your hat in the ring.

Feel free to contact us or come down on a club day to find out more about Martlet Kayak Club.

We provide facilities, equipment and training to assist you on your paddlesport journey. We are run by volunteer members and love it when everyone gets involved.

We are open, at the arches, on Tuesdays and Thursdays (from 5:30pm: Spring until Autumn) and Sundays (10am: all year).

Membership costs between £5 and £10 per person each month, which includes the use of all the club boats and equipment.

All our coaches are Paddlesport UK qualified and give their time free of charge to members.

Our name ‘Martlet Kayak Club’ comes from the mythilogical bird the Martlet. It is a bird that never lands, and is a symbol for continuous effort. It’s a great reflection of how it feels being in the community of MKC, as we all work together on our paddlesport skills, as well as creating exciting new opportunities for the club as a whole.
